Boston's acting Mayor Kim Janey has declared a heat emergency for the city, as temperatures are expected to reach the mid-90s this weekend and early next week.

Cooling Centers will open on Sunday, June 6, and will stay open until Tuesday, June 8, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. They'll be located at Boston Centers for Youth & Families community centers.

Tot sprays are open at parks and playgrounds, but outdoor city pools will remain closed.

Janey said it is the first time this year the city has seen heat and humidity for an extended period of time.

"We are opening our cooling centers so all residents have an option to come inside and cool off in air conditioning,” said Janey in a statement. “I’m urging everyone to take precautions and find ways to stay cool over the next few days. Please watch out for each other. If you see someone out in the heat who appears in distress and needs help, call 911 immediately.”

Much of the interior New England can expect hot weather beginning Saturday afternoon. The lower to mid 90s temperature weather will start on Sunday, but will be more noticeable on Monday.

The heat wave is expected to subside by Thursday.
