Boston Man Drowns Off Castle Island

A 19-year-old Boston man drowned Thursday off Castle Island, officials said.

State Police say the man was swimming far from shore with his brother when he did not resurface. His body was recovered several hours later.

The man's name has not been released.

His death marks the latest in a string of deadly drownings across Massachusetts in the last month. The latest data from the Department of Public Health show that from January to May, there were 47 drownings, including 18 in May alone.

In response to the uptick in drownings, Gov. Charlie Baker on Thursday filed legislation intended to encourage safe swimming by increasing fines for those who swim outside of designated state waterfronts.
