Authorities Release Name Of Woman Shot, Killed By Saugus Police

Authorities have released the name of the woman shot and killed by police in suburban Boston over the weekend.

The woman shot in Saugus at about 4:30 p.m. Saturday was identified by the office of Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett as Stephanie Gerardi, 38.

The shooting happened when three Saugus police officers responded to a home after getting a request for assistance involving a person in distress, authorities said.

Blodgett's office said the officers entered the residence and were confronted by a woman brandishing a knife.

One of the officers fired three times, striking the woman, authorities said. The officers and emergency service workers immediately rendered aid, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the district attorney's office.

The officers were not injured but were taken to the hospital as a precaution. Their names were not released.

The shooting is under investigation. The officer who opened fire was placed on administrative leave per department policy.
