Suffolk County Sheriff reports 5th prisoner death this year

The Suffolk County District Attorney is investigating the death of a prisoner at the Suffolk County jail earlier this month.

It's the fifth death of a detainee at the jail this year.

A statement from Suffolk County Sheriff Steve Tompkins says Charail Premdas, 33, appeared to have a seizure during breakfast on Dec. 5. The statement said officers used an emergency defibrillator and were able to revive Premdas, but he died shortly after he was taken to the hospital.

Premdas had been held at the jail since October on an aggravated assault charge out of Boston Municipal Court. His case was scheduled to go to trial next week.

The sheriff's statement says foul play is not suspected and an investigation into the exact cause of Premdas’ death is underway.
