Boston police union and city agree to tentative 5-year contract after years of delay

The Boston Police Department's largest union reached agreement Friday with Mayor Michelle Wu on the framework for a new five-year contract.

"This tentative agreement reflects our shared focus on ensuring safety across every neighborhood through community policing and providing necessary resources for the health and well-being of officers and their families," Wu and Boston Police Patrolmen's Association President Larry Calderone said in a joint statement.

The police union has been working without a contract since 2020.

Wu made police reform a primary focus of her 2021 campaign for mayor. She promised not to sign any new contract that did not include "significant" reforms to the disciplinary process and overtime pay.

The exact details of the tentative agreement were not immediately available.

Any deal would need to be ratified by a majority of the union's members.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
