The fame of the 1975 cult classic musical “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” is far-reaching. The campy, horror-tinged film starring Susan Sarandon, Tim Curry and Barry Bostwick and inspired by the 1973 stage production “The Rocky Horror Show,” has continuously found its way into theaters year after year, grossing more than $226 million at the box office.

It’s no surprise then, that Ryan Landry and The Gold Dust Orphans have applied their unique brand of shtick to the narrative in their “The Rocky Menorah Christmas Show” at Iron Wolf Theatre at South Boston Lithuanian Citizens Association showing through Dec. 23.

In Landry’s version, singing Christian elves, superheroes, and Hermione P. Grinchley dance, fight, and frolic in a frisky, excitingly over-the-top holiday show. The risqué innuendos synonymous with his work somehow find a natural place in this musical where a U.S. Representative with a mangled eye is the antagonist eager to rid the planet of liberals. The green-skinned Mrs. Grinchley takes the place of the heavily lip-lined Frank-N-Furter, Brad Keebler (Eric McGowan) and Janet Winky (Taryn Lane) are elves who believe the world shares their faith, Eddie is a reindeer, and Dr. Scott is Santa Claus.

Much exists in the world that divides us: differing ideologies, politics, and religion are just a few. Landry mixes all these polarizing things to make a hilarious and harmonious two-act tale with a message that stresses the importance of unity above all.

Spectacle is Landry’s specialty, and with set and costume design by Scott Martino, smart direction by Kiki Samko, who also portrays Fuchsia, and musical directors Tad McKitterick and Tim Lawton, the team — which boasts a cast that’s not afraid to go all out — bands together to deliver.

An expansive medieval-esque castle, called the Temple-Schmemple is erected across the stage with working windows and doorways where characters and animals pop out. There are winged angels, and primary-colored sequined suits with matching satin gloves,  and French maid outfits — also by Martino — that adorn the characters in this comical romp with rousing musical numbers lit up by lighting designer Matthew Brian Cost.

Whether one is familiar with the film’s original storyline is of no consequence. The impressive use of props, which includes a rocket ship, a horse, and a giant open-mouthed toothy monster, keeps audience members laughing, not to mention the appearance of an oversized inflatable menorah and aerial acrobatics.

Landry mixes today's polarizing issues into a hilarious and harmonious two-act tale

Be forewarned that Landry, who is also a visual artist, and the Orphans do not shy away from much. There’s romance, nudity, religious themes (I know, an odd combination), and lots of fun. Even a technical snafu or two, such as a wonky mic, won’t stop the action, and Landry isn’t afraid to break the fourth wall to engage the crowd further.

Still, even with all the zany antics, Landry gets serious for a moment and takes the time to belt out a ballad that encourages everyone listening to focus on finding common ground instead of focusing on what separates us.

Even beyond the holiday season unity is a timeless message we should all be able to get behind.
