Mass. RMV resumes vehicle inspections following worldwide tech outage

You can once again get your car inspected in Massachusetts.

Inspections resume Wednesday after a multi-day shutdown of the statewide inspection system following the massive tech outage that disrupted systems across the world last Friday.

People who missed their deadline to retest following a failed inspection will get a reprieve; anyone whose retest deadline was between July 19 and July 31 now have until Aug. 10 to get their sticker, according to a Registry statement.

Motorcycle inspections have been available during the disruption.

Immediately following the outage last week, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation cancelled all appointments, including at the RMV, and was later able to resume some services.

The RMV said it was not canceling road tests at this time. Suspension hearings also were affected but were being conducted by phone and could be scheduled online.

Last Friday's tech outage was caused by software distributed by the cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike and affected Microsoft users. The software glitch caused a technological meltdown that halted services at airlines, banks, hospitals and emergency services around the world. Boston area hospitals, the MBTA, Logan Airport and other state transportation services were also disrupted by the outage.
