Labor Day weekend forecast: What to expect for the unofficial end of summer

Labor Day weekend is upon us, and it’s time to embrace the unofficial end of summer.

Whether you’re planning a beach day, backyard barbecue or just taking some time to relax, the forecast has a little something for everyone. Let’s dive into what you can expect over the holiday weekend:

End of the week: A breath of fresh air

What a difference a day makes! After hitting a high of 91 degrees in Boston Wednesday, Thursday brings a refreshing change. Expect pleasant weather with low humidity and comfortable temperatures. Highs will reach the lower 70s under a mix of sun and clouds. As evening falls, temperatures will cool fairly quickly, so you might want to grab a light jacket if you’re heading out.

Friday keeps the pleasant, comfortable vibe going with highs around 70. Sunshine will be plentiful, making it a great day to enjoy some outdoor activities or just take in the crisp, early fall air.

Saturday: Humidity returns

Saturday will start off with partly- to mostly-cloudy skies. Temperatures will warm up to the mid to upper 70s, with gradually increasing humidity throughout the day. Most of the day will be dry in and around the Boston area. A cold front will bring scattered showers and thunder in northern New England by the afternoon to evening. A few of those storms may move south, but likely not until after 7 p.m.

Sunday: Wet start then slow improvement

With the front slowing down a bit over us Saturday night into Sunday, pockets of rain and embedded thunder will linger over us during that time. While there's still a bit of uncertainty as to when exactly the back edge of the showers will depart, the second half of Sunday does look like it will feature gradual improvement, with the bulk of the rain tapering off and moving offshore and decreasing cloud cover.

Sunday will be the warmest day of this holiday stretch, with highs in the mid 80s and sticky conditions during the morning. Drier air and lowering humidity will move in throughout the day.

Labor Day: A pleasant finale

Labor Day itself is shaping up to be a beautiful day. Highs will reach the low 70s with crisp, fall like air returning. Expect lots of sunshine and dry weather — perfect to enjoy the last unofficial day of the summer season.

Looking ahead: A taste of early fall

After Labor Day, we’ll be treated to a gorgeous stretch of early fall weather with morning temperatures in the 50s and highs in the 70s. It’s the perfect time to enjoy those outdoor activities as we ease into autumn.
