Boston Calling adds Berklee jazz musicians to play festival

Boston Calling is banding together with Berklee College of Music for this year’s festival. Seven student jazz acts will perform in the festival’s indoor arena over Memorial Day weekend.
Berklee alumni and students have played Boston Calling’s main, outdoor stages in the past, including the singer-songwriter Kieran Rhodes last year. This May, the indie pop band Lucius is on the bill.
Berkelee President Jim Lucchese said in a statement he’s proud to see the festival highlight more artists with connections to the college.
"In addition to alumni like Lucius taking the main stage, we’re thrilled to showcase our incredible student talent for attendees in the arena. Boston Calling also provides a fantastic opportunity for these students to experience and learn about the workings of a large scale festival from the inside.”

The indoor arena is being revived this year after a hiatus. When the festival relocated to Harvard’s Athletic Complex in 2017 the space was used to highlight stand-up comedians. Saturday Night Live cast members including Fred Armisen, Michael Che and Jenny Slate made appearances there. Actress Natalie Portman hosted a selection of films screened in the arena.
Organizers describe the space as a spot to chill, recharge and take a break from the heat and excitement outside. Berklee student acts including Tiril Jackson, Solaya + The Effect and Su Yavuz are scheduled to help foster that vibe each day through the afternoon and evening.
In the announcement, Boston mayor Michelle Wu added she’s excited to see these rising stars take the stage this May. “Boston Calling is a cornerstone of our city’s vibrant arts scene and now a treasure annual tradition,” she said. “The festival’s dedication to highlighting local talent makes it a perfect stage for Berklee’s exceptional musicians, offering students a unique opportunity to share their artistry with new audiences.”
