Rick Pitino, New England's basketball pariah, is back in town

04:28

Basketball coach Rick Pitino was run out of Boston in 2001 after he led the Celtics to three-plus consecutive losing seasons. In the years since, legal trouble threatened to derail his career altogether.

But now, he's back in New England. Thursday night, his St. John's University team notched a win in the first round of the NCAA tournament in Providence.

Boston Globe sports columnist Dan Shaughnessy, who's covered Pitino for more than 50 years, joins WBUR's Morning Edition to reflect on Pitino's complicated career and legacy.

This segment aired on March 21, 2025.
