Alleged serial rapist charged with assaulting an officer in jail
A man accused of sexually assaulting nine women over three years while posing as an Uber driver now faces charges for allegedly punching a correctional officer twice in the face.
Alvin Campbell Jr. was arraigned in Boston Municipal Court last month for the November assault at the Suffolk County Jail, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney's office.
Campbell has been in custody since his January 2020 arrest on rape charges. A WBUR investigation last year found police and prosecutors did not act on multiple reports of rape by Campbell over several years, despite DNA evidence.
Campbell is the brother of Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell. The attorney general has recused herself from all aspects of her brother's case and said the prosecution has her “unreserved support.”
The new assault allegations add to a long list of charges against Campbell. According to a release from the Suffolk DA, Campbell was participating in a recreation period when he tried to take a uniform top that didn’t belong to him.
A corrections officer asked him to stop, and Campbell allegedly told him to "shut the (expletive) up," according to Hayden's office. Campbell then punched the officer in the face two times, giving him a bloody lip, prosecutors said.
"Just like we often see with all our other law enforcement partners, the daily duties of a correctional officer can be unpredictable. I am thankful the situation here was quickly contained," Suffolk DA Kevin Hayden said in a statement.
Campbell is due back in Boston Municipal Court on April 24.
Separately, Campbell is set to appear in Superior Court for a motion hearing May 21 on the rape charges, with a jury trial scheduled for September.
