Open Newbury and Open Streets are returning to Boston — with a few tweaks

Boston's series of car-free block parties is returning this summer and fall — with a few schedule and location changes.
During a press conference Wednesday, Mayor Michelle Wu unveiled the 2025 schedule for the city's Open Streets and Open Newbury series. What began as a single-day event on Newbury Street in 2016 has since expanded to over a dozen weekends and half a dozen Boston neighborhoods, in which the city closes off sections of streets for pedestrians to shop, dine, enjoy music and activities, and meet their neighbors.
"That's what Open Streets is all about, creating opportunities for neighbors to spend time together and show off everything that makes your neighborhood special, to deepen relationships on your block and across communities," Wu told reporters in Mattapan, which is getting its first-ever Open Streets event in the fall.
The fourth annual citywide Open Streets series is slightly scaled back compared to last year's expansion. While the city is adding Mattapan to the lineup, the schedule does not include two neighborhoods included in 2023 and 2024: Allston-Brighton and East Boston. The city is also dialing back the length of the events by two hours, with each running from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. And there will be shorter closed-off street sections this year in Roxbury and Dorchester.
In the press release, city officials hinted at the possibility of additional Open Streets events "in other neighborhoods" being added to the schedule later in the season.
Meanwhile, Open Newbury will start a few weeks later this summer, running every Sunday from July 13 through Sept. 21 (besides Labor Day weekend). The city will also hold one event in December to encourage holiday shopping in Back Bay.
The location and hours for Open Newbury are staying the same, with all eight blocks from Berkeley Street to Mass. Ave. closed to cars from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
