We asked, you answered: WBUR readers’ favorite birthday cakes around Boston

We’re in the midst of WBUR’s 75th birthday celebration, The WBUR Festival, right now. But devotees of this newsletter — and our station — know WBUR’s actual birthday was a couple of months ago, on March 1.

To mark the occasion then, I went around the office and asked my colleagues to dish where they get their birthday treats. Their answers included some beloved Greater Boston spots like Donna’s Cakes in West Roxbury, Lyndell’s Bakery in Somerville, Cabot’s in Newton and a few grocery store gems, like the Whole Foods berry chantilly cake.

I also asked you, readers and listeners, to share your favorite birthday desserts and where to get them. In honor of this weekend’s festivities, we’ve wrangled some of those recommendations together for a mouthwatering roundup. Keep reading — you might discover your new favorite place for a sweet treat.

Gondres Bakery

333 Centre St., Boston

“Gondres on Centre Street in JP is the place to go for any traditional Dominican treat!” Nayomi Dowman said. She gets “the Classic,” which is a traditional Dominican cake with guava filling, yellow sponge and meringue frosting.

“It's the memories that it brings back,” Dowman shared. “It's the fluffy sweetness of the meringue, the moisture of the yellow sponge, the smoothness of the guava filling! You all must try!”

Royal Pastry Shop

317 Marrett Rd., Lexington

“Grew up getting cakes here,” Jennifer Welz shared. She recommends the whipped cream cake with strawberries or a traditional rum cake, which are both “amazing and delicious.”

Flour Bakery

10 locations across Boston and Cambridge

It’s no secret: Flour is popular. Two readers said it was their birthday go-to.

“Anything from Flour is amazing,” Shel Frolich-Tscherne wrote. “We typically get either the lemon raspberry or the Boston cream pie cake. Living in Marlborough, we don't get to Flour often, which makes it all the more special when we do.”

Reader Nat Green also recommended Flour’s coconut cream pie, which comes with whipped cream and a butter crust.

Verrill Farm

11 Wheeler Rd., Concord

The traditional cheesecake at Verrill Farm is Rachel Frenkil’s favorite. “It’s so creamy and dense, but not in a bad way,” Frenkil said. “Just the right amount of tang. I get it for every birthday and Shavuot (a Jewish holiday where cheesecake is king).”

Coffee Time Bake Shop

96 Bridge St., Salem

When it comes to the cakes at Coffee Time, “golden cake with chocolate frosting is our favorite,” Stephanie Buck wrote. “It's a classic, and loved by the whole family. But they're all so good, as are their donuts and paczki.”

Wegmans

Five locations across Massachusetts

The next time you’re in a Wegmans, keep an eye out for the chocolate fudge two-layer cake — off the shelf, not special order, Ilene Greenberg suggested. “The mini is a perfect size for four,” wrote Greenberg. “Very moist, very fudgy frosting!”

Lyndell’s Bakery

720 Broadway, Somerville

If you’re looking for the best birthday cake, “Lyndell's is the correct answer,” according to Mary Mangan. “In fact, my birthday cake is on order at Lyndell's for [this year]. Yellow cake, old fashioned frosting, flowers. It tastes like the birthday cakes of my youth.”

FoMu

Three locations across Boston

Adrienne Naylor had three words to describe FoMu’s mud pie ice cream cake: “Exquisite vegan decadence.”

Honorable mentions:

  • Eclairs from Praliné, a French bakery in Belmont
  • Tahini carrot cake from Sofra in Cambridge
