Here are some of the silliest submissions for a new Massachusetts flag, seal and motto
Earlier this year, the state put out an ask to its residents to propose designs for a new Massachusetts state seal, flag and motto.
The state received 1,165 submissions — 997 flag, 377 seal and 407 motto entries — and released the entire submission list online. On Thursday, the state will announce the top three contenders for each: the seal, flag and motto.
While many of the submissions are sincere and thoughtful, a handful definitely showcase Bay Staters' passion for graphic design and clever wit.
In no particular order, here are some of our favorites:

This one has everything: Dunkin', Gov. Maura Healey, a lobster, a pride flag, some cannabis, the Patriots...

Just in case you weren't sure where Massachusetts is on the map.

Cotton Mather was unavailable for comment.

Who's that cute guy running on Dunkin'? It is, of course, the state dinosaur, Podokesaurus holyokensis, or "the swift-footed lizard of Holyoke."

This one has a certain je ne sais quoi.

This submission was for the state seal and flag. It's the state seal, get it??

These colors don't run! 🫡

Not sure how New Hampshire would feel about this one.

We think this is an orca shooting lasers, near some cranberries? We're into it. If you designed this, please get in touch and explain more for us. UPDATE: We have since learned this is a nod to an in-joke among flag enthusiasts.

Not actually that silly, but we like the shark in a Pilgrim hat. The motto is almost exactly what the current state motto is. ("Ense petit placidam sub libertate quietem" which means, "By the sword we seek peace, but peace only under liberty.")

A nod to Super Bowl LI, where the Patriots came back in the fourth quarter to win the trophy over the Atlanta Falcons.

It would be wicked cool if it was.
