Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for African Affairs at the National Security Council, 1997-1998. Served as Ambassador to the Gabonese Republic and the Democratic Republic of Sao Tome and Principe, and Deputy Chief of Mission in Brazzaville, Congo (1986-88) and Bujumbura, Burundi (1982)

John Dean, counsel to President Nixon from 1970 to 1973. He now writes a column for Findlaw and is the author of several books, with the next to be published in January 2004, a biography of Warren G. Harding
