Four books into a still-young career, novelist Colson Whitehead has had the prizes and accolades young writers dream of. He's been compared to Ralph Ellison and Toni Morrison as a new great African-American literary hope, and compared to Thomas Pynchon and Saul Bellow as a writer working well beyond race.

Whitehead has also won a half-million dollar MacArthur "genius" grant. GQ magazine called his fist novel "The Intuitionist" one of the best books of the millennium! The New York Times calls him "tall, dark and handsome."

Now Whitehead has written a new book about our cultural obsession with branding and identity. It sounds like he could have fun with himself.

Hear a conversation with Colson Whitehead about his new novel "Apex Hides the Hurt."

Guests:

Colson Whitehead, author of "Apex Hides the Hurt," "The Colossus of New York," "John Henry Days," and "The Intuitionist"

This program aired on September 4, 2006.
