In 360 BC, Plato wrote of Atlantis.  A city, once flourishing, now gone, sunk into the sea.  For some it’s a story, a myth.  For others, a tantalizing mystery to be solved.  A chance to discover a lost world.  For our guest, author Mark Adams, it became an obsession.  Over three years he visited eight countries.  And found a sub-culture of other explorers searching for the city based on clues they found in Plato’s writings.  He wrote about his adventure in the new book, “Meet Me in Atlantis.”  This hour, On Point: searching for the lost city of Atlantis with author Mark Adams.

From The Reading List

Live Science: 'Lost' City of Atlantis: Fact & Fable — "Atlantis is a legendary "lost" island subcontinent often idealized as an advanced, utopian society holding wisdom that could bring world peace. The idea of Atlantis has captivated dreamers, occultists and New Agers for generations. Unlike many legends whose origins have been lost in the mists of time, we know exactly when and where the story of Atlantis first appeared. The story was first told in two of Plato's dialogues, the 'Timaeus' and the 'Critias,' written about 330 B.C."

Slate: We’ll Never Find Atlantis -- "There doesn’t seem to have been any one prominent explorer, writer, or scientist championing Atlantis in the 15th century, but, according to writings and recorded conversations from that period, this was the time in which it was reborn in popular consciousness."

Guardian: Archaeologists find two lost cities deep in Honduras jungle -- "Archaeologists have discovered two lost cities in the deep jungle of Honduras, emerging from the forest with evidence of a pyramid, plazas and artifacts that include the effigy of a half-human, half-jaguar spirit. The team of specialists in archaeology and other fields, escorted by three British bushwhacking guides and a detail of Honduran special forces, explored on foot a remote valley of La Mosquitia where an aerial survey had found signs of ruins in 2012."
