Tuesday morning, House Speaker Robert DeLeo unveiled a comprehensive bill aimed at revamping the state's gun laws.

It's the most ambitious effort to reform Massachusetts gun legislation in the past two decades and would do the following:

  • have Massachusetts join a national background check database
  • give police chiefs more authority to restrict licenses
  • require all private gun sales to be conducted in the presence of a licensed dealer

WBUR's Sacha Pfeiffer gets details on the legislation, which has been in the works since the Sandy Hook shootings in Newtown, Conn., two years ago.
