Consumers might have to scramble for affordable eggs come Jan. 1.

A referendum, approved by voters in 2016, on animal welfare could, inadvertently, drive up the cost of eggs. How did we get here? And if the state Legislature doesn't pass an amendment to this law, how much will the price of eggs increase?

We crack the case with Bill Bell, the general manager of the New England Brown Egg Council, and John Pregantis, the owner and chef at Party Favors, a bakery and party supply store in Brookline.
