Volunteer hosts help Massachusetts battle migrant shelter shortage one home at a time

14:05

Massachusetts' emergency family shelter system remains at-capacity, hundreds of families are stuck on a state shelter waitlist and many migrants have taken to sleeping at Logan Airport to stay off the streets. But some state residents are volunteering to house newly-arrived immigrants themselves.

Organizations like the Immigrant Support Alliance in Melrose pair immigrants with volunteers who host them and help them find their footing in the country — even as some of their neighbors struggle to welcome immigrants with open arms.

Paul Belfanti, director of the organization, joins Radio Boston to discuss his group's work and the current situation for migrants in the commonwealth.

This segment aired on January 24, 2024.
