Last week, the new song "Good (Don't Die)" disappeared from Kanye West's catalogue on Spotify after the estate of Boston disco star Donna Summer claimed the track violated Summer's copyright on her 1977 hit "I Feel Love." Disagreements involving one artist's sampling of another's work are common — in 2018, a dispute between rapper Nicki Minaj and Tufts alumna and "Fast Car" singer Tracy Chapman resulted in a lengthy legal battle.

Peter Karol of the Center for Intellectual Property at the University of New Hampshire Franklin Pierce School of Law, Bhamati Viswanathan of New England Law and historian Dart Adams join Radio Boston to discuss the history and legal complexities of sampling.

This segment aired on February 21, 2024.
