East Boston is a neighborhood of immigrants. About half of its residents are foreign-born. But as with many areas of Boston, parts of the neighborhood are gentrifying, forcing some members of the immigrant community to leave due to rising housing prices.

Two local nonprofits teamed up to help Boston kids learn and tell immigrant stories of East Boston in a play on City Hall Plaza. A new documentary called "Open Your Heart: Immigrant Stories from Boston and Beyond" captures the experience.

Mindy Fried, Executive Producer of Hoopla Productions, one of the nonprofits involved, and creator of the documentary joins Radio Boston to talk about the film along with Luz Zambrano, an immigrant from Columbia living in East Boston whose story is part of the play.

This segment aired on March 18, 2024.
