Rep. Auchincloss says constituents are worried about Biden's ability to win and lead

Massachusetts Congressman Jake Auchincloss remains tight-lipped on his opinion if President Biden should remain the Democrats' candidate for November.
Speaking with WBUR's Radio Boston on Friday, Auchincloss noted his constituents were concerned about Biden's ability to win, but that the decision making process is best done "with unity in mind, with candor and confidentiality."
Auchincloss reiterated his previous comments that Biden needs the "grace and the space" to make his decision, even after Biden double downed on his decision to stay in the race as he took questions from reporters Thursday night.
Biden held the widely-viewed press conference in an effort to allay fears about his health following a disastrous debate performance two weeks ago. He said he would take a neurological test if his doctor recommended one. He insisted he is the most qualified candidate to beat former President Donald Trump, but told reporters he needs to pace himself more on the campaign trail.
Auchincloss noted that he has spoken to many of his constituents in the past two weeks who have shared that they have "great affection and respect for Biden," but that they are also "terrified" he's going to lose to Trump and if he does win, that he will be "significantly diminished" during his second term.
On Friday morning, fellow Massachusetts Congressman Seth Moulton continued his call for Biden to step aside, suggesting Democrats instead hold a "mini-primary" before the party's national convention.
In this segment, The Atlantic writer Tom Nichols, the Boston Globe's James Pindell and former Massachusetts Congressman Mike Capuano also share their thoughts on the race with Radio Boston.
This segment aired on July 12, 2024.
