What does it mean to be American?

It's a question at the center of the We Are America project, which works with teachers across the country to record their students' stories.

Today, more than 1000 stories have been published from students and teachers in more than 25 states. We speak with the founder of the project, along with a participating teacher in this year's cohort and a student mentor.

Editor's Note: An earlier version of this story stated that there are more than 500 students' stories in the "We Are America" project. That number was from winter 2024. That number was updated to 1000 to reflect the number of stories as of summer 2024.

This segment aired on July 29, 2024.
