Radio Boston sat down with four people who spent years in prison in Massachusetts. They shared what it was like to re-enter society after being incarcerated. We spoke about their past and the changes they'd like to see in the state's legal system.

Guests:

  • Daniel Throop, founder of the National Prison Debate League. His organization helps create and support debate teams in state and federal prisons across the country. You can watch their debates on their YouTube channel.
  • George Vicente, former member of the National Prison Debate League and graduate of the Harvard Divinity School.
  • Clarence Williams, director of community engagement for the National Prison Debate League and board member of the incarceration support group, Crossing The Rubicon.
  • Ruth Rollins, executive director and founder of the nonprofit We Are Better Together Warren Daniel Hairston Project.

Editor's note: An earlier version of the audio attached to this post incorrectly cited a lack of response from the Massachusetts Department of Corrections. The department did respond to a request for comment, and the live broadcast included that response. The updated audio file included the department's statement. We regret the error.

This program aired on August 16, 2024.
