Boston Athenaeum is making manuscripts in Indigenous languages more accessible

04:34

The Boston Athenaeum has more than 200 publications in nearly three dozen Indigenous languages from the U.S. and Canada. A project recently made those texts available digitally to better help researchers and the public learn more from them.

One of the ways that's happening is through what’s known as revitalization work, which expands our knowledge of tribal history and culture, particularly through the preservation of endangered or lost languages.

Sage Loyema Innerarity, of the Ione Band of Miwok Indians in California, was a fellow at the Athenaeum and had been cataloging and digitizing the collection. She joined WBUR's All Things Considered.

This segment aired on November 26, 2025.
