George Washington may have been one of the first fashion designers. Really

12:06

What do you picture when you think of George Washington? First president? Army general? Slave owner?

Horace D. Ballard says we should add fashion trendsetter to the list.

Ballard is the Theodore E. Stebbins Junior Curator of American Art at the Harvard Art Museums and is working on a upcoming book about Washington and fashion. He spoke with WBUR's Morning Edition about the role fashion played in Washington's life, including how the one-time Harvard Square resident dressed himself to become the country's first president.

This segment aired on December 19, 2025.
