Advocates say law enforcement needs tighter restrictions on facial recognition software

07:13

Law enforcement is increasingly relying on technology that scans physical traits to identify people during arrests.

Some of that technology is made in Massachusetts. For instance, Immigration and Customs Enforcement has a contract with Bi2 technologies of Plymouth for its iris-scanning software.

Most of the technology isn't new, but it has many local privacy advocates nervous.

Kade Crockford, the director of the Technology for Liberty program at the ACLU of Massachusetts, joins WBUR's Morning Edition to discuss regulations they are pushing for on Beacon Hill.

This segment aired on February 13, 2026.
