1980 Olympic men's hockey gold medalist Mike Eruzione on this year's gold medal team
Mike Eruzione is the Winthrop native who scored the game-winning goal against the Soviet Union in the 1980 Olympics. The team went on to secure a gold medal by beating Finland.
It was the only gold medal moment for generations of American men's hockey — until this Olympics. The U.S. men's team won the gold in overtime against rival Canada on Sunday.
Eruzione, who played college hockey at Boston University, spoke with WBUR's Morning Edition from Milan, where he saw the U.S. win the gold.
This segment aired on February 23, 2026.
