How musicians are keeping silent film traditions alive
When silent films first hit theaters in the early 1900s they were typically accompanied by live music. A pianist would set the scene musically as Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton or Mary Pickford appeared on screen.
Bruce Vogt is one of the musicians keeping the tradition alive.
He will perform Sunday at the West Newton Cinema, accompanying the films "The Scarecrow" starring Buster Keaton and "The Wind" with Lillian Gish.
He spoke with WBUR's All Things Considered host Lisa Mullins.
This segment aired on March 5, 2026.
