5 Coronavirus Deaths Reported in Mass, One In Boston; Number Of Cases Surges To 646

Three more Massachusetts residents have died from COVID-19-related illnesses as of Sunday, bringing the total number of statewide coronavirus-related deaths to five, according to data released Sunday afternoon by the state Department of Public Health.

The three new deaths involve two men in their 70s — one from Hampden County and the other from Berkshire County — and a Boston man in his 90s, the first COVID-19 death in the city, according to Boston officials.

In addition, there are now 646 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the state, up from 525 on Saturday. 116 of those cases are in Boston, according to data from the city.

The two previous coronavirus deaths in the state were a Winthrop man in his 80s and an Ayer women in her 50s.

Of those who are infected statewide, 71 have been hospitalized for COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus.

The increase in cases comes as the state continues to ramp up its testing efforts. In a press conference Saturday, Gov. Charlie Baker said that daily testing numbers for state labs have doubled since Wednesday.
