This event is ideal for newbies, beginners and patient intermediates. Mei Mei will provide mahjong sets, printed guides and a 15-20 minute tutorial. We’ll review game setup, game play and talk a little bit about the many varieties of this beloved game.
What to bring: We’ll provide snacks and tea – please bring your own reusable mug! If you have a mahjong set, bring that too! Sets will be available for sale if you’d like to purchase one at the event.

Frequently Asked Questions
Wait — there are different kinds of mahjong?
Oh, honey. Yep, the most common variations are American, Riichi, Hong Kong, Taiwanese, Chinese Competition Rules and Solitaire, if that can even be called mahjong at all. HK style is the easiest to learn and what we grew up playing, so that's our focus!
Can I come to play American-style mahjong?
This event is focused on Hong Kong style mahjong, so no — but you're welcome to come learn with HKMJ us! If you're looking to play American-style (also known as Jewish American-style), there are lots of clubs out there you can join!
I already know how to play HK mahjong. Should I still come?
Of course, as long as you're willing to play with beginners! If you're looking for a faster paced game or even a tournament style event, this might not be the best place for you. We won't cover more intermediate/advanced topics like jokers, scores, gambling etc.
I want to play with my friends and guests only. Is that ok?
Mahjong is played in groups of four. We'll do our best to keep your party together but may suggest splitting you up based on level and arrival time. Regardless, please expect to meet new people - that's part of the Mission!
How serious is this training? Will I be able to beat my grandma at mahjong after this?
You might be able to hold your own with grandma, but you probably won't beat her (and it depends what kind of mahjong she plays). We'll be focused on the basics and will not cover things like jokers, scoring etc. If you want to teach that stuff to your table, you're more than welcome to, though.
