As residents in northeast struggle to find their parking spots under a thick blanket of snow, civil engineers at the University of California Berkeley say that there are too many parking spaces in the U.S.

The researchers surveyed all of the parking spots across the country, from the metered city spots to big box stores in the Midwest, and they found that parking spots are almost as bad for the environment as the cars meant to fill them. We speak with Mikhail Chester, lead author of the study.

This segment aired on January 12, 2011.
