Eight years ago, Kevin Berthia, who was then 22, was ready to jump off the Golden Gate Bridge. California Highway Patrol officer Kevin Briggs gently talked to him for an hour, and convinced him not to jump.

The two men are reuniting Wednesday night at the American Foundation Suicide Prevention’s annual dinner in New York, where Berthia will present Officer Briggs with an award for public service.
