A veteran Associated Press photographer was killed and an Associated Press reporter was wounded today when an Afghan policeman opened fire while they were sitting in their car in eastern Afghansitan.

Anja Niedringhaus was an internationally acclaimed German photographer. The AP says she was killed instantly. Kathy Gannon is the AP's Afghanistan bureau chief.

This is the latest violence in the run up to Saturday's election when Afghans will elect a new president.

NPR's Sean Carberry spoke to Here & Now's Robin Young from Kabul about the elections before the news of the attack on the two journalists.

"No one here really believes there's going to be any type of wholesale change in the structure here, and honestly a lot of analysts say that the system couldn't handle that much change, that it needs evolution not revolution," Carberry said.
