Australian officials leading the search for missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 are encouraged by sounds detected underwater.

"With the acoustic events, we are encouraged that we're very close to where we need to be," said Australian Air Chief Marshall Angus Houston, who is coordinating the plane search.

The sounds were detected in recent days by equipment used to identify sounds from the plane's black boxes. Houston warned that it could take days to confirm whether the signals are from the missing jet.
