Even before the dramatic events in Ukraine, Vladimir Putin was being viewed with increasing suspicion in the West for his authoritarian style of government.

Russia's annexation of the Crimea has done further damage to the president's reputation in Europe and America. But not in Russia. Surveys show that President Putin's popularity at home has risen sharply — and so has suspicion of the West.

The BBC'S Moscow correspondent Steve Rosenberg has been to the village of Tchaikovskovo about 60 kilometers from Moscow to gauge Russian public opinion.
