Political tensions have escalated in Thailand, as the army declared martial law nationwide early Tuesday morning.

The army chief said this is not a coup. The acting prime minister has been in power for two weeks and the imposition of martial law was reportedly declared without his knowledge.

This comes after months of anti-government demonstrations, some of them violent. The BBC's Jonah Fisher discusses what's behind the political unrest with Here & Now's Jeremy Hobson.
