Uber says it will fight the state of California to preserve its independent contractor-based business model.

That status is suddenly in jeopardy after the state passed a law earlier this month that makes it much harder for companies like Uber to avoid classifying their workers as full employees with benefits.

Lawyers for labor and management alike say the bill and its legal challenges could have implications far beyond California.

Here & Now's Jeremy Hobson speaks with Monique Ngo-Bonnici, chair of the Los Angeles and Silicon Valley labor and employment practices for the law firm Winston & Strawn LLP.

This segment aired on September 24, 2019.
