Whether you've been dreading it or counting down the days, it’s the season for holiday music.

Before you hit repeat on Mariah Carey and Wham!, try adding something new to your Christmas playlist.

There are quite a few different kinds of Christmas music out there that we don't hear all that much of, but Alex Rawls does. He hosts the podcast "12 Songs of Christmas.”

“I appreciate Christmas music the way I appreciate all music,” Rawls says. “I've always thought about Christmas music as a musician's challenge or as an artist’s challenge. If you're a songwriter, can you write a song that lands in that spot that has a reason for people to listen to it? And if you're a musician and you're taking a song we all know, what can you do with it to give your version a reason to exist?”

This segment aired on November 29, 2024.
