Remembering Jim Thistle

Jim Thistle: his name is synonymous with Boston television. During his 30 years in broadcasting, Thistle worked at various times as News Director at three network affiliates in the Hub — WBZ, WCVB, and WHDH — and at WLVI, Channel 56.

Since 1982, he's been teaching at Boston University. He ultimately became director of its broadcast journalism program there.

Jim Thistle died yesterday after a long battle with throat cancer. He was 66.

He was a pioneer in Boston broadcasting and a mentor to many in the local scene. Among them: Susan Wornick. She's co-anchor of the Midday newscast on WCVB Channel 5, where she's also a member of the station's investigative unit.

Susan Wornick joins WBUR's Deb Becker in remembering Jim Thistle.

A wake will be held from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Ernest P. Caggiano & Son Funeral Home in Winthrop. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Parish in Everett. Both are open to the public.

This program aired on July 30, 2008. The audio for this program is not available.
