Suffolk University Fires President After 1 Tumultuous Year

The president of Suffolk University in Boston has been fired after a tumultuous yearlong tenure marked by power struggles with some members of the board of trustees.

Margaret McKenna in a statement said she plans to fight her dismissal.

McKenna says she spent her tenure fighting "entrenched interests" who "did not understand university governance."

She was fired Thursday after an emergency meeting of the board of trustees at which allegations of lavish spending and abusive behavior toward university employees were found to be unsubstantiated.

Trustees gave no reason for her firing.

But McKenna said she was told she was fired for among other reasons inadequately communicating with the board about university accreditors and improperly providing information to the accreditors.

McKenna had announced in February, after a public dispute with the trustees, plans to step down no later than fall of 2017.

Provost Marisa Kelly will take over as acting president.
