Nick Adams will be the new executive director of the Boston-based Cantata Singers. He succeeds Jennifer Ritvo Hughes, who after six and a half years with Cantata joined Boston Baroque as executive director.

Adams comes from Longwood Symphony Orchestra, where he was executive director for four years. Prior to that, Adams was the director of operations for seven years at Symphony NH.

The long history Cantata Singers have in Boston made it a "no-brainer" for Adams to decide to take the position. By coming in mid-season, Adams added he has an advantage because so much is already set into place for him to finish off the season on a high note. He hopes to use his more than 11 years of experience in the nonprofit arts sector in his new role.

"I'm really, really excited to be supporting Maestro Hoose — I think the work he does with the singers is really incredible," Adams said. "Secondly [I'm excited] just to continue the good work that has been established ... from the previous executive director."

The Cantata Singers was founded in 1964. The chorus' early concerts featured Bach’s cantatas. Its repertoire began expanding in the 1970s and now includes music from the 17th century to today.

“Nick has dedicated his career to the full range of administrative leadership in music organizations," Rick Simpson, chair of the board of trustees of Cantata Singers said in a statement. "We are fortunate to have him join us as executive director."

That sentiment was shared by David Hoose, Cantata Singers’ music director.

“Nick won us all over with his impressive level of experience, thoughtful personality, energy, imagination, and artistic openness. We could not be more fortunate,” Hoose said in a statement. “All of us with Cantata Singers very much look forward to working with Nick, with whom we will create the next exciting chapter in the life of this amazing organization.”

Adams is slated to begin the role on Jan. 1.
