Several South Boston Establishments Agree To Voluntarily Close Ahead Of St. Patricks Day

A number of South Boston establishments have agreed to voluntarily close Sunday over public safety concerns due to the coronavirus and in preparation for an influx of people in the area ahead of St. Patrick's Day on Tuesday.

In a statement, Kathleen Joyce, chairwoman of the Boston Licensing Board, said that "based on the number of patrons in the area on Saturday and health and safety concerns" the board has worked with several South End businesses to determine that they should voluntarily close Sunday.

So far, here are the businesses --mostly in South Boston but also elsewhere in Boston — that are closed Sunday as part of this measure or through their own decision-making process:

  • Lincoln
  • Capo
  • Loco
  • Fat Baby
  • The Junction
  • The Playwright
  • Broadway
  • Roza Lyons
  • Backyard Betty’s
  • Publico
  • Stats
  • Merchant Logo
  • Shenannigans Bar
  • Cambria Hotel (The hotel will service hotel guests only.)
  • Coppersmith
  • Black Rose (The restaurant is located near Faneuil Hall Marketplace on State Street.)

“For the first time in our 40-plus year history, the Black Rose will close today for St. Patrick’s Day festivities as we evaluate this evolving situation and follow the guidance of city and public health officials," the restaurant's owners said in a statement. "We are postponing the celebration to a later date, as we all need to do our part right now to help stop the spread of the coronavirus. We appreciate our customers and look forward to celebrating with you all soon.”

State Sen. Nick Collins in a statement thanked Boston Mayor Marty Walsh, his fellow elected officials, the licensing board and licensed businesses taking this step, saying "... We are in unchartered waters here and all need to heed the advice of public health professionals to help stop the spread of COVID19 ... ."

"We are all in this together and it’s imperative now that we all do all that we can to keep our communities safe," he added.
