Mass. Zoos Outline Plans For Allowing Visitors Back

Several zoos across the state have opened, or are preparing to open, this week, but with many restrictions.

Southwick's Zoo in Mendon opened Monday, and Franklin Park Zoo in Boston and Stoneham's Stone Zoo will re-open for members on Thursday and Saturday, respectively, and then the general public on June 4.

John Linehan, president of Zoo New England, the non-profit that runs Franklin Park and Stone zoos, told WBUR the zoos will be following all state and federal guidelines regarding the pandemic.

"Just working very hard to make this a safe, enjoyable experience. And I think people will have a great time. You know, many of the  animals have really missed the visitors here," he said.

Linehan said the zoos will be open at just 15% of their guest capacities.

The zoos all require visitors to purchase tickets in advance. Each ticket will allow for park entry at a specific time. While in the park, patrons must wear masks and keep 6 feet away from others. Only outdoor exhibits will be open.
