The bright spotlight on the Ray Rice case called attention to domestic violence and the way the NFL and other sports leagues handle athletes’ off-field issues. In the latest issue of Sports Illustrated, Michael McKnight and Jon Wertheim have reconstructed a 10-year period when Major League Baseball teams ignored warning signs that a well-known outfielder was abusing his wife.

The article is titled “This is what Domestic Violence Looks Like” and is made up almost entirely of direct quotes from legal documents and news reports of the time. McKnight joined Bill Littlefield to discuss the piece. Listen above to their full conversation.

This segment aired on April 11, 2015.
