J.R. Smith Hits $30K Shot For Military Family

Although the NBA season doesn't begin until later this month, fans gathered Monday night at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland to watch the Cavaliers play an intrasquad scrimmage.

Before the Wine and Gold game began, Cavs guard J.R. Smith threw up a low-percentage shot from half-court — something he commonly does during warmups. But this particular shot was anything but common: $30,000 was on the line.

By nailing the shot, Smith won the money for a military family. In classic J.R. Smith fashion, the nothing-but-net make was followed by a windmill air-guitar celebration. And since this is 2015, it was, of course, also followed by an Instagram post.

When the regular season begins on Oct. 27, the Cavaliers will likely want Smith shooting from well within the range he displayed Monday night. Half-court shots are generally ill-advised, but one family is certainly happy Smith took this one.
