photoCharles Vest stepped down as president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology last month. During his 14 years at its helm, he was an outspoken advocate for America's national preeminence in science and called for scientific research to be unfettered, open and shared.

Now, in a new book, Vest has compiled a series of essays he wrote during his tenure as president of MIT in which he continues to advocate for the critical role top universities play in keeping America at the forefront of global innovation.
