New Orleans’ famed funk band Galactic mixes it up with everybody in the Big Easy.  Their big beat and must-move sound has flowed around Alain Toussaint and Irma Thomas, Big Freedia, Trombone Shorty, the Nevilles. This time out Galactic is flowing around and through a whole country’s sound.  The sound of Brazil and carnivale.  Fused with New Orleans and Mardi Gras.  It’s a big party.

This hour, On Point:  to New Orleans and Brazil with Galactic.
-Tom Ashbrook

Guests

Robert Mercurio, Galactic bassist and co-producer of the group's new album: Carnivale Electricos. You can find a list of tour dates here.

Highlights

From Tom's Reading List

NPR "Get ready to dance, because it's Mardi Gras — a day to cut loose before Lent begins. In New Orleans, that means a day of parades, costumes and music everywhere you turn."

Los Angeles Times "It’s Mardi Gras in New Orleans. It’s Carnaval in Rio. Beads are being thrown, tails are being shaken. Parades are rolling through the streets in blowouts bidding “farewell to the flesh” before Ash Wednesday brings on Lenten austerity. And there’s much flesh being celebrated."

Times-Picayune "On its 2010 album “Ya-Ka-May,” Galactic treated contributions from Irma Thomas, Allen Toussaint and other local legends as raw ingredients for sonic alchemy. Galactic’s new “Carnivale Electricos,” to be released Fat Tuesday by Anti-Records, is of a piece with “Ya-Ka-May” and its hip-hop-themed predecessor, “From the Corner to the Block.” Grooves are goosed with studio wizardry, vocals are chopped and distorted, beats are looped."
