The Prussian military strategist Carl Von Clausewitz famously said: "War is the continuation of politics by other means."

Jerry Parisella knows that well. On Jan. 5, Parisella will be sworn in as a state representative from Beverly. Later that month, he'll pack his bags for Iraq, where he'll serve as a U.S. military attorney. Parisella has been in the Army Reserves for 17 years and this is his third deployment. It will be his first time in Iraq.

While Parisella is serving in Iraq, he will not be able to cast any votes on Beacon Hill. But Parisella says he's not planning to step down from his elected position. Some of his soon-to-be constituents, however, have questioned whether it's possible to serve in the legislature and serve in Iraq simultaneously. Parisella says he can manage.

Guests:

  • Jerry Parisella, State Representative-elect and U.S. military attorney

This segment aired on December 22, 2010.
